New Deal/WPA Art in Granville, Ohio

The US Post Office in Granville, Ohio has a mural by Wendell Jones entitled "First Pulpit in Granville". It is an oil on canvas that was installed in 1938. According to Democratic Vistas - Post Offices and Public Art in the New Deal, Jones stressed the sense of community - people coming together to settle a community in Granville - in his painting. He wrote: "I think Americans like these in the picture, thoughtful, homeloving, industrious, independent shall never be destroyed". (p. 140)
