In the dining room of the Black Hawk State Historic Site
lodge are two oil on canvas murals depicting Indian life. They are in the
process of being renovated. Although the artist was unidentified for many
years, recent research has revealed that Otto Hake was the painter. One
of the murals is entitled "Chief Blackhawk - Winter Round House"
and is 18' x 8'6". The other is named "Sauk and Fox Indians -
Summer Long House" and is 15' x 18'6". Originally these painting
were intended for installation in another building but were transferred
to the lodge in order to preserve them. Unfortunately the murals did not
fit the space and a small portion of the outer perimeter was cut off to
fit them into their mountings. The murals are on display during regular
lodge hours.
