Washington School was opened in February 1901. It cost $35,000. Until 1928, Frederick Nichols, superintendent of District 76, headed Washington School. During the Depression, District 76 teachers were paid in time checks carrying interest and the schools were kept open. Two addition were built in 1935 and 1953 due to increased enrollment.
The government records show that several pieces of art were sponsored by Washington School.
